Dominican Republic Holidays

Dominican Republic Holidays offer a high degree of variety in every aspect of your relaxing time in the Caribbean. Even the land speaks of these contrasting possibilities: the interior offers an extensive mountain range and the highest peak in the Caribbean (Pico Duarte); yet you’ll also find the lowest point too, in the saltwater lake of Lago Enriquillo. Travelling from ocean to interior, you’ll see the intensely modern urban sprawl give way to huge plantations and small villages. Both the rural and urban here are intriguing and beautiful.

The Dominican Republic is a land of significant historical importance, and any time uncovering its colonial history is time well spent. The island that the Dominican Republic shares with neighbour Haiti is Hispaniola which was the site for the first European colonies in the new world. The capital, Santo Domingo, has the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas. On a Dominican Republic holiday you will find numerous fascinating 16th Century buildings throughout Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, which include the beautiful Catedral de Santa Maria la Menor and the impressive Fortalez Ozama, the oldest surviving military fortification in the Americas.

Things to do

Hoyo Azul

Hoyo Azul

Hoyo Azul is a natural gem of Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic. An utterly stunning attraction, this huge swimming hole, or cenote, bedazzles with its bright blue waters, dappled light, and dramatic, 75-metre-high cliff drop. Visitors at Hoyo Azul are invited to swim in the refreshing pool, reaching the water via a footbridge and staircase.

Even the journey to Hoyo Azul is majestic - passing through verdant rainforest and even an orchid garden. Your hike will reveal a world of beautiful flora and fauna, which your guide should be able to point out for you.

Sirenis Aquagames Punta Cana

Sirenis Aquagames Punta Cana

Definitely one for the family-friendly Dominican Republic holiday hitlist, Sirenis Aquagames Punta Cana is a huge waterpark spread over an area of 12,000 square metres. Fully-equipped to ensure visitors can splash out all day long, Sirenis Aquagames has all sorts of pools, rides, and slides, as well as plenty of other facilities.

When you’re done with spills and thrills, pause for lunch at the restaurant area, complete with menu options to suit even the fussiest of eaters. There is even a nursery area for those visiting the waterpark with very young children.

Whale Watching in Samana

Whale Watching in Samana

Samana, a town on the Samana Peninsula in the Dominican Republic, becomes the temporary home each year for around 2,000 humpback whales as they come to mate in the warm waters. This, of course, is a spectacular sight as these huge creatures perform acrobatics, splash their fins, and even sing ‘songs’.

Nearby, the Whale Museum houses a huge whale skeleton, whilst the waterfront promenade - the Malecón - is lined with restaurants and bars. There are also plenty of nearby beaches and secluded bays for you to explore on your visit to Samana.
