Things to do whilst on holiday
Sample the sumptuous food in San Francisco - It’s not all about the burgers and hotdogs! Start your day the right way - the American way, with a trip to one of Lori’s Dinners for a breakfast like no other. Omelettes to die for with a choice of filling, blueberry pancakes drenched in warm maple syrup, toast with melted butter on a multitude of breads all washed down with cup of freshly ground coffee! For lunch take a stroll down Fisherman’s wharf then just follow your nose and the freshly baked bread smell that will lead you to Boudins Bakery where you can enjoy a freshly made clam chowder served in a bread roll bowl. If you still have room in the evening for dinner, the restaurants at Fisherman’s Wharf have some of the freshest seafood available. Caught and served within hours you can enjoy a choice of the finest lobsters, scallops and an array of fish that’ll make the mouth water. Like with most American restaurants you’ll get large portions of such delectable food it’d be criminal not to finish. – Get your doggie bag at the ready!
A trip to the Prison Island of Alcatraz won’t disappoint and a top priority of things to do whilst in San Francisco, just remember to book in advance. A 15-minute boat trip will take you to this federal prison island nicknamed ‘The Rock.’ With the insightful audio tour you’ll be immersed into a bygone world of crime and the justice system. It will feel like you are rubbing shoulders with some of Alcatraz’s most notorious criminals including arguably America's most infamous mafia boss – Al Capone. Imagine what it must’ve felt like, standing on the boat as the island draws ominously closer and you say goodbye to freedom and the beauty of the bay, to see your home for the next 20 years! Thankfully you don’t have to spend that long, with a regular ferry service back to the bay every 30 minutes.
As you’d expect in America the shopping is a second to none and always a great place to pick up a bargain. San Francisco is certainly no exception. If its malls you are after, a trip to Union Square has the world famous Macy’s Department Store. Set on multi-levels whatever you’re looking for is sure to be here! If you’re looking for something a little thriftier try one of the many outdoor markets that are peppered around the city, or take a trip to China Town (the biggest one in the world outside of Asia) for a great lively shopping atmosphere.
For something a little more active hire a bike and ride around the city taking in the main sights including Lombard Street, one of the most crooked and winding streets in the world. Then take the ultimate biking buzz by riding across the imperious 1.7miles of the Golden Gate Bridge. With exceptional views of the whole city, you’ll be stopping for that picture shot every 100 yards. Ride along a little further and it’ll take you to the gorgeous town of Sausalito. This picturesque enclave has a great mix of boutique shops, restaurants, beaches and a marina.
Weather
The weather in San Francisco is similar to the Mediterranean climate with moist mild winters and dry summers. As the bay area is surrounded by three sides of water it is renowned for the cool winds and fog in summertime brought on from the low pressure drawing winds from the north Pacific High through the Golden Gate Bridge.
