Simplicity is key for a boutique hotel and a little luxury goes a long way. When it comes to perfecting The Art of Escape, the best way is to truly immerse yourself into your surroundings and the Caribbean is full of destinations ideal for doing just that. Caribbean resorts can of course vary in size, style and personality, but we think for a successful boutique hotel, all it takes is a humble setting with an incredible backdrop. We touch base with the experts at Kenwood Travel on their favourite boutique retreats in the Caribbean.

Palm Island Resort & Spa, Grenadines

Palm Island Resort & Spa in the Grenadines is a place where you come to relax, wine, dine and explore the other islands. Even though it’s a boutique hotel, the grounds are huge and add to the beauty. Being such a small resort, the attention to detail is remarkable. From dinner to guest services, everything had been considered. The staff remembered my name from the second day and I was greeted every time I saw them. They knew exactly what I ordered for breakfast and what my favourite red wine was to drink with dinner; the staff make you feel like family here.

I stayed in the Beachfront Room; a hut style room perched right on the white sands. You walk out of your door and the ocean is right there. What I love is that there is no WiFi around the resort, with the exception of the lobby, and there are no televisions in the rooms. This is a place for you to spend time with your fellow traveller without being distracted by your mobile, meaning you can take in the absolute beauty of this very special place and really switch off for a week or two, which we all need from time to time. You can read a book in a hammock on the beach, swim in the pools, try stand-up paddle boarding, or even watch a movie on the beach in the evenings.” See more about Palm Island Resort & Spa here.

The House by Elegant Hotels, Barbados

What makes The House in Barbados feel special? For one, it’s tiny. There are only 34 rooms, and over 60 ‘ambassadors’ to look after the guests. Their ambassadors are essentially multi-skilled, cross-trained members of staff. The only prerequisite for these ambassadors is that they’re passionate, service-driven and hungry to learn… and it shows. The hotel definitely has more of a beach and relaxation vibe, with an element of fine dining, too.

That said, you can easily take a taxi down to St. Lawrence Gap, which is the vibrant strip full of bars and restaurants around a 20-30 minute drive away. It’s recently undergone a refurbishment too, and there is a real luxury feel about it. Everything from the furnishings to the décor gives it a really chic feel – making it, in my opinion, one of the most luxurious resorts in Barbados. It simply is a cut above the rest.” See more about The House, Barbados, here.
