Being the tropical paradise that it is, the holiday destination of Mauritius boasts an astonishing variety of plants, with the gigantic water lily of Mauritius the most spectacular of them all.

Sadly, this amazingly big water lily has become part of the infamous list of endangered species, according to NGO for environmental conservation EPCO.

The environmentalist group says the water lily is being eaten up by Golden Apple snails, a species suspected to come from South America. EPCO has urged Mauritius government to act accordingly and make an urgent action plan to control the snails in order to avoid fatal consequences.

Giant water lilies can be found at the Mauritius National Botanic Garden, as splendid garden located near Port-Louis in the district of Pamplemousse. The botanical garden spreads over infinite acres of land and it’s home to more than 650 varieties of plants including Baobabs, the Palmier Bouteille, many medicinal plants and, of course, the impressive Giant Water Lily.

This national botanical garden firstly opened as a private garden by the French governor of Mauritius around three centuries ago and it’s one of the most visited attractions in the island. If you want to witness for yourself the mesmerizing beauty of the giant water lily, you can always visit the gardens on your next luxury holiday to Mauritius with Kenwood Travel.
