Mauritius is undoubtedly one of the world’s most desirable beach holiday destinations. Its celestial beauty captivates our imagination and promises true escapism from our everyday routines. The stunning chromatic range of turquoise waters, bright white sands and deep green palms is everywhere here, creating the quintessential tropical image. It’s paradise. Heritage Resorts certainly agree, seeing fit to build two hotels, hundreds of villas, an 18-hole championship golf course and various leisure facilities on the island. One ought to trust their judgement too, being as they are a heavyweight on the luxury hotelier scene.

Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort

A big attraction for Heritage Resorts had to have been the island’s integrated tourist development, Le Domaine de Bel Ombre, where their properties are situated. An idyllic corner of an already eye-catching landscape, Le Domaine de Bel Ombre comprises some 2,500 hectares, tumbling from the mountains to the golden shoreline on Mauritius’ south-west coast. Its history, in the Western consciousness, can be traced back to 1765 when the French first settled there.

An irresistible prospect for famous navigators and authors of the day, the Domaine de Bel Ombre caught the attention of prominent Irish botanist Charles Edward Telfair who, in 1816, attained the rights to the area. Affectionately dubbing his new kingdom ‘the small Eden of Bel Ombre’, he soon set about implementing new farming and milling innovations. He was also responsible for supporting slaves for whom he established a school, hospital and choir.

The Domaine’s fate ultimately lay in sugar plantation and was to remain as such until 1961 when tourism began to boom. The fledgling industry suitably expanded and today plays host to numerous world-class properties – namely Heritage Avali Golf and Spa Resort and Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort. In 2006 the Frederica Nature Reserve opened its doors to the public, too.
