Underwater Art In Cancun

The last thing you’d expect to find when scuba diving is more than 400 life sized sculptures in an underwater installation that occupies over 150 square metres. But this is what you’ll see if you visit the Museo de Arte Subaquatico (MUSA) – an spectacular underwater sculptural museum set beneath the waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc.

MUSA is a superb example of how important the role that context plays in our interpretation of works of art is. Moreover, the whole installation surpasses art itself and its main goal is conservation: the sculptures are made from pH neutral clay in order to promote the growth of coral.

This monumental extravaganza was founded by Jaime Gonzalez Cano of The National Marine Park, Roberto Diaz of The Cancun Nautical Association and the artist Jason deCaires Taylor, and it has since become one of the largest and most ambitious underwater man-made attractions in the world.

Located a short distance from the renowned Manchones Reef, the museum lies within the Cancun Marine Park, the famous stretch of water that attracts around 750,000 visitors each year from all over the world.

‘The Dream Collector’, ‘Man on Fire’ and ‘The Silent Evolution’ are among the different sculptures and compositions you’ll find in this unparalleled exhibition, sculptures often cast from living models and well known characters from Cancun and Puerto Morelos.
