Hotels are meant to make us feel special, but these luxurious rooms raise hospitality to royal proportions. Ranging in size from the modest (135 square metres), to the massive (670 square metres), these rooms, suites and villas all promise one thing: total, all-out luxury.

5. Burj Al Arab, Dubai

The world’s only 7-star hotel was bound to appear on a list of most luxurious rooms in world travel, so we went straight to the top – 150-metres-above-sea-level top – to unlock the secrets of the super-exclusive Diplomatic Three-Bedroom Suite. One for the celebs and dignitaries, this accommodation covers a jaw-dropping 670 square metres and comprises three separate bedrooms and bathrooms, a private bar, three distinct living spaces and a private dining area for eight.

Personal service extends to a ‘brigade’ of butlers, in-suite check-in/out and a separate entrance and kitchen for staff. Gadgets range from 21in iMac and widescreen interactive TVs, Bose iPod docking and remote control curtains, while extra comforts like his-and-hers Hermes bathroom products and complimentary Arabic sweets and sparkling date juice plus in-suite cocktails and hors d’oeuvres round off the mesmerising array of luxury features.

4. W Retreat & Spa, Maldives

Fabulous Overwater Oasis – This was surreal, but very cool… At night you can flip a switch in the bathroom which illuminates the midnight marine life through a glass panel in the floor. Showering has never been so educational! Indeed, the position of this lavish room category is all about its relationship with water, wherein lies its luxurious, tranquil appeal. Not only do guests have direct access to the crystal-clear lagoon above which the villa is perched, you also enjoy your very own private plunge pool.

There’s plenty of room on the spacious sundeck to top up tans and lounge on the comfy daybeds. And if you want to keep all the luxury to yourself you can dine in by firing up the barbecue for grilled snacks accompanied by a vintage choice from your own fine wine fridge. A 42 inch plasma TV, BOSE® sound system and complimentary high speed internet access complete the mod cons for a stay full of chilled out entertainment.

3. Banyan Tree Samui, Thailand

Emerging from the jungle canopy of a sequestered island cove on Koh Samui’s south-eastern shore, Banyan Tree Samui’s exquisite villas inspire complete and utter tropical escape. Of the resort’s nine villa categories – all of which feature private pool – the crème de la crème has to be the Presidential Pool Villa. The whole unit actually comprises two interlinked one-bedroom villas to create a palatial accommodation enhanced via the sweeping gulf views afforded by its elevated position among the tree tops. Two villas means two pools of course, and there’s also a landscaped garden, rain shower and spacious living areas. Thoughtful extras like double-curved foam pillows, floral bloom bath and even an in-room telescope put the finishing touches on this once-in-a-lifetime luxury experience.

2. Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort, Saint Lucia

Despite there being a four-bedroom option, we’ve chosen the Two Bedroom Villa Residence as our most luxurious room at Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort, Saint Lucia. Why? Well, our favourite view on the island is of the Pitons, so that swung it for us. (The four-bedroom residence boasts tropical views of Glenconner Beach, so isn’t exactly found wanting – Ed.) Now, this might make it the most diminutive abode on our list of most luxurious hotel rooms in the world, clocking up a modest 135 square metres, but what in lacks in size it makes up for in character and, of course, luxury features.

Silk-smooth Egyptian cotton linens line the four poster bed in the master bedroom, complete with romantic voile draping. The unit also provides signature bath and beauty products, a private bar, private patio with walled garden, infinity-edge plunge pool and personalised butler, as well as a host of other upscale amenities.

1. COMO Parrot Cay, Turks & Caicos

All accommodations at Como leave you awestruck. From rooms and suites to villas and houses, each option comes with butler and pool so luxury is a given no matter where you lay your hat. ‘The Residence’ comprises a five-bedroom main house plus two three-bedroom villas. An enormous site that might be pushing the limits of what can be considered a hotel room, suite or villa. So let’s take a look at the Island Villa for something a touch more accessible. The beauty of the Island Villa is the dialogue between its interior and exterior spaces – something that always enhances the atmosphere of island life in the Caribbean.

The poolside decking alone measures 230sq, almost as much as the 340sqm interior floorplan. That’s a lot of personal space inside and out. There are three bedrooms with en suite and a kitchen area, plus guests benefit from sea & horizon views, dedicated COMO butler service, private pool and direct beach access.
