Things to do while in Crete

The café culture in Crete is certainly something to be sampled. If you find yourself in a small village or town, check out a kafeneion where you can try local coffees, beers, raki and ouzo.

Crete is an island of many festivals which mostly revolve around barbecues, music and dancing. From July to August the island celebrates Kyrvia Festival, where there is wide programme of cultural activities to try your hand at.

There are plenty of places to indulge in retail therapy. Head to the Iraklio Market and you'll find a treasure trove of edible delights including fresh fruit, olives and bread straight from the oven. The Talos Plaza meanwhile is a large mall where you can purchase an array of well known fashion labels.

Crete, unsurprisingly for an island with such an extensive past, has a choice of fascinating historical sites to visit. The Venetian Fortress, built between 1573 and 1580, has left a beautiful set of ruins to explore while the Lychnostatis Museum recreates a traditional Cretan village.
