Six Senses Douro Valley

5* out of 5 stars

Go for the romance of Douro Valley, stay for the serenity of Six Senses. Imbued with an atmosphere of luxury, this hotel was lovingly restored from a 19th Century manor to effortlessly match the beauty of what is a famously picturesque corner of Portugal. Its hillside position reveals the vine-swathed landscape and river valley below, while onsite swimming pools and organic gardens populate the property’s own rolling grounds.

Accommodation varies between guest rooms, suites and villas – some private pool – providing all tastes and budgets with an option that suits. Décor sensitively marries Six Senses’ signature style with hints of the locality’s artistic heritage, and is brought together with plush appointments and formidable facilities such as 48-inch plasma and free WiFi.

Of course, discerning visitors to this area seek the authentic wine and spa experience, and Six Senses Douro Valley delivers just that with aplomb. Succumb to a range of transcendent therapies at Six Senses Spa, complete with 10 treatment rooms, hydro pools, a gym and eco-friendly materials throughout that create a truly peaceful space.

Meanwhile, guest regional winemakers join resident sommeliers at the hotel’s interactive Wine Library, ready to educate budding gurus-of-the-grape in classic Douro Valley vintages. And what better to accompany these characteristic bouquets than cuisine that has been similarly infused by the region’s natural attributes? Sit down to classic dishes at The Restaurant and The Dining Room that burst with flavours and aromas from the fresh vegetables and herbs handpicked from the estate’s own gardens.
