Japan’s capital, Tokyo, is as synonymous with neon and new technology as it is fun-filled family holidays and romantic couples’ breaks. With so much to see and do, you’ll find an enlightening cultural experience or dizzying view around very corner. You can engage with the city’s dynamic tempo as it races to the future, or allow its ancient Shinto spirituality to inspire true relaxation. And the food. Wow. To put its culinary prowess in context, Tokyo has 226 restaurants currently boasting the coveted Michelin-star rating; Paris has less than a hundred.

Great reasons to holiday in Tokyo

  • City views – Many hotel rooms afford spectacular city-facing aspects that showcase one of the world’s most impressive and iconic skylines, especially at night when it sparkles with neon lights.
  • Technology – Tokyo is the gadget capital of the world. Get the latest games and devices and see prototypes of the designs of tomorrow.
  • Nightlife – Kareoke is of course the popular choice among revellers in Tokyo but you’ll also find pubs, nightclubs and classy wine bars too.
  • Culture – Ancient temples and tranquil water gardens serve as reminders of Japan’s proud history. From geisha girls and samurais to haiku and manga, Tokyo is a melting pot of Japan’s wonderfully rich culture.
  • Cuisine – Sample sushi at the source and taste the most refined culinary quality. By the last count, Michelin had awarded stars to a whopping 226 Tokyo restaurants and there are currently 12 three-starred restaurants in the city - the most of any city in the world.
  • Fashion – Fascinating fashion trends blending westernised influences thrive in Tokyo. People-watching in Harajuku reveals the weird and the wonderful in all their glory.
  • Architecture – Gaze in awe at Tokyo International Forum, Asahi Beer Hall, Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building and Rainbow Bridge for examples of Tokyo’s globally admired buildings.

Things to do whilst on holiday in Tokyo

Catch a baseball game featuring Tokyo’s favourites the Yomuiuri Giants at the Tokyo Dome. For more traditional sports action head to Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena – National HQ of the Japan Sumo Association.

Learn the fascinating story of Tokyo’s history with a visit to the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno Park. Ueno Zoo in the same park is also well worth a visit.

Other excellent museums for culture vultures include the National Museum of Western Art, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Odaiba and the Edo Tokyo Museum.

Experience traditional Japanese drama at National Noh Theatre or Kabuki-za.

Ascend Tokyo Skytree. Tokyo’s tallest tower is a must-visit attraction, with glass flooring on the 350 metre high level. Gain 360 degree views over Japan’s capital and its 12 million residents.

Buy interesting items from a vending machine. A bouquet of flowers or a toasted sandwich, perhaps?

Cross the road at Shibuya Crossing. The world’s most famous pedestrian crossing – even giving Abbey Road a run for its money – is unique in that approaching road traffic from all four directions is halted simultaneously. The result is ordered chaos, as thousands of people cross at once.

Weather in Tokyo

Tokyo has a subtropical climate that creates hot, humid summers and cool to mild winters. As is the case with most of Japan, the warmest month is August while the coolest is January. Snow occurs most winters but is sporadic, while the volume of rainfall averages at about 60 inches per year.
