Arrival / Colombo

On arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be met by your English-Speaking chauffeur guide and transferred to Colombo.

Transfer Time: Approximately 1 hour. Upon arrival in Colombo, check in at the hotel.

In the evening, you will enjoy a city tour of Colombo.

Day 2
Sigiriya / Habarana

After breakfast, you will travel to Dambulla/Habarana.

Transfer Time: Approximately 4 ½ hours.

Commonly referred to as the ‘Cultural Triangle’, the central plains area boasts of temple ruins and ancient cities combined with national parks and glistening reservoirs. UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the striking rock fortress of Sigiriya, Dambulla’s Royal Rock Temple and crumbling archaeological treasures of Polonnaruwa. Habarana is a popular tourist destination for safari lovers as it is the starting point for safaris in the nearby Minneriya sanctuary which is heavily populated by elephants. This makes it an enthralling visit for wildlife and cultural lovers alike.

Day 3
Sigiriya / Habarana
After an early breakfast, you will visit the Lion Rock, one of the seven World Heritage sites of the island.
- It is recommended to carry a bottle of water.
Transfer Time: Approximately 30 minutes.

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress and ruins of a castle, which was once the home to King Kasyapa. The entrance to the original fortress was through the mouth of a lion, however the ravages of time have resulted with only a part of the massive paws remaining today. A testament to ancient artistry and architectural ingenuity – Sigiriya has many attractions to its visitors – its gardens (boulder, water & terraced), its artistry (the world-renowned frescos), the mirror wall and the dramatic history linked to the construction of the Lion Rock. An original Lost City, Sigiriya is a must see on any visit to the Cultural Triangle.

Afternoon, enjoy a game drive at Minneriya National Park / Kaudulla National Park OR Eco Park*

Transfer Time: Approximately 15 minutes per way.

Minneriya National Park - Located between Habarana and Polonnaruwa, the 8,890 hectares of Minneriya National Park consists of mixed evergreen forest and scrub areas and is home to favourites such as sambar deer, leopards and elephants. However, the central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank (built in 3rd. century AD by King Mahasena). During the dry season (June to September), this tank is an incredible place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze, as well as the huge flocks of birds (cormorants and painted storks to name but a few) that come to fish in the shallow waters.

*Depending on the elephant movement, you may visit the nearby Kaudulla National Park or Hurulu Eco Park instead.

Day 4
Kandy

This morning, you will head to “the last kingdom of Sri Lanka” – Kandy.

Transfer Time: Approximately 3 hours.

En route you will stop to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple.

Dambulla Cave Temple - This is located in the North Central Province. This UNESCO World Heritage Site which dates back to the 1st century BC is an amazing complex of 05 caves, first used as a refuge by an ancient king who on regaining his throne, commissioned magnificent carved images within the living rock. Later kings made further improvements and the caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is a colossal figure spanning 15 meters. Cave inscriptions from the 2nd Century BC are found and on the walls are many paintings most of which belong to the Kandy period (early 19th century). This temple is a perfect location to view evolution of ancient Sri Lankan art and is an important historical site due to the amalgamation of the material from many eras.

Next you have the option to stop over at Matale Spice Gardens.

Matale Spice Garden (Optional) - You will have the opportunity to dabble in the homeopathic remedies of the East! The pungent aroma of the spice permeates the air as you explore the treasure garden of the Spice Gardens

Continue your journey to Kandy.

Kandy - Sri Lanka's hill capital, stronghold of the Sinhala Kings, is our most beautiful town. The focal point of the town is, without doubt, the golden roofed Dalada Maligawa. The highlight of the year is the Esala Perahera, when a replica of the relic casket is taken in procession accompanied by exotically costumed dancers, drummers and elephants during ten glittering nights in July/August. Visit Kalapuraya in the beautiful Dumbara valley. There are many shrines and temples, where you will see rare paintings, frescoes, wood and stone carvings.

Kandy
This morning, enjoy a visit to the famed Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
- Light colour clothing with covered sleeves and trousers/skirts below the knee recommended.
- As it is a religious site, footwear will have to be taken off prior to entrance, socks can be worn if you wish to.
The Temple of the Tooth, which is commonly known as "Sri Dalada Maligawa" is situated in the city of hills, Kandy. It is an important shrine for Buddhists as it holds the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. It is famous for its carvings and the beautiful art that is unique to Sri Lanka. The most important part of the Dalada Maligawa is the octagon (Pathirppuwa). The Sri Dalada Maligawa is the most sacred temple in the whole of Sri Lanka. Thousands of people line up each day to get a glimpse of its majesty.

Late afternoon, your guide will take you around Kandy for a City tour.

Thereafter, experience an exhilarating show of traditional Kandyan Dance Show in the evening.

Nuwara Eliya

This morning, enjoy your drive to Nuwara Eliya.

Transfer Time: Approximately 3 ½ hours.

En-route you will visit a Tea Plantation and Tea Factory.

Visit a tea plantation and a tea factory where one of the best tea in the world is produced. You will be told all about the process of manufacturing tea and gain first-hand experience of the manufacture of some of the best tea in world. If you're lucky you may be invited to taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea which begins its journey as raw green leaves in the hills and ends up as a final golden-brown graded product which we all know too well.

Thereafter you will proceed to your hotel. Check in and relax the rest of the day.

Day 7
Galle

This morning, you will proceed to Galle.

Transfer Time: Approximately 6 – 6 ½ hours.

In the evening, you will experience a Walking tour of Galle Dutch Fort.

Galle said to be the famous Tarshish of the Old Testament, where King Solomon obtained gems and spices, this “living” UNESCO World Heritage Site is a fortification first built by the Portuguese on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka. Thereafter the fort went under extensive modifications during the Dutch & British rule, making it one of the most important archaeological and historic monuments to illustrate the European influence in Southeast Asia between the 16th and 19th centuries. Old Dutch churches and monuments with armorial bearings, well preserved fort and ramparts, old Dutch houses and narrow alleys bearing Dutch names are all sites to look out for. Take a stroll around the Fort, where the streets laid in a rectangular grid and the low gabled houses and terraces in the Dutch colonial style, the entire town gives a feeling of quaint but beautiful nostalgia. If you are a lover of history and archaeology, or looking for a peaceful and fun holiday, the Fort of Galle has much to offer you with its ruins and monuments, boutique hotels, art galleries, eateries and pretty little shops.

Upon completion return to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Arrival / Yala

On arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be met by your English-Speaking chauffeur guide and transferred to Yala which is located on the Southern Coastline.

Head towards Yala National Park. This is Sri Lanka’s most known National Park and is popular for Elephant, Leopard, Bear, Crocodile and Wild Boar. 97,800 hectares in extent, this is the second largest of Sri Lanka’s National Parks. Its open undulating terrain made it famous for elephants for many years, but recently the park has also received much fame through publicity by National Geographic and the Discovery TV channels, which focused on a leopard research/conservation and identification project. Claims have subsequently been made that Yala National Park has the world’s highest concentration of leopards per square kilometer.

An exciting jeep safari awaits. Early this morning you will start your first journey into the Yala National Park.

A packed light breakfast along with a few refreshments will be offered during this 4-hour excursion. This is a great opportunity to spot the elusive leopards and wild elephants among many other beasts as you venture deeper into the wild.

Return to your hotel for lunch before you embark on an afternoon safari.

(The main block at Yala National Park is generally closed from 1st September till 30th October (Annually) but only confirmed by the authorities in August. The closure is to allow the animals some peace during the drought period and to allow regeneration. However, all the hotels will remain open. During the Yala Closure period, Game drives are possible in Yala blocks 3, 5 & nearby Lunungamvehera National Park and Bundala National Park.)

Set off early morning to climb the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress.

Transfer time: approximately 30 minutes per way

Sri Lanka’s most recognizable attraction, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a spectacular Rock Fortress. The most impressive facets of this unique complex are the Water Gardens, the Frescoes of beautiful maidens, the Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti, the Lion platform, and the Summit of 1.6 hectares, which was completely covered by buildings during the period of Sigiriya’s glory. Built by King Kashyapa (477-495 A.D), the “Lion Rock” is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200m from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70-hectare fortified town, and the base is ringed by a moat, rampart, and extensive gardens. The world-renowned frescoes (originally 500, of which only 19 remain today) which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway are painted with earth pigments on plaster. The old stairway to the top led through the mouth of a crouching lion but today only the huge paws remain giving an indication of the massive proportions of the head. Remains of the handsome royal citadel are on the summit and several caves for meditation, audience platforms and baths complete the unique site.

This morning you will take a walking tour of the Galle fort.

Afterwards, leave behind Dutch architecture and drive towards Udawalawe. It is regarded as one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants. It is famous for large herds of wild elephants and deer. Crocodiles, wild buffalo, peacock, and a large variety of bird life could also be seen.

This afternoon you will go on a safari to the Udawalawe National Park – It is an area of 31,800 hectares, which was declared a protected sanctuary with full national park status in 1972. The park area which falls within two provinces of Sri Lanka has an annual rainfall of 1,520 mm and an average temperature of 29.4 C. Surrounded by mountain ranges, the terrain of the park is a mixture of grassland, which of all Sri Lanka’s wildlife reserves, best rivals the Savanna of Africa and shrub jungle. Teak plantations, water holes and two important factors make this park special - the large Udawalawe Reservoir and the Walawe River, which ensure a supply of water for the fauna within. Internationally renowned for its large herd of elephants, the park is also known for several species of Deer, Wild Boar, the dangerous Wild Buffalo, Jackal and very rare sightings of Leopard.

This morning you will visit the Elephant Transit Home (10.30 AM)

The home caters for juvenile elephants that have been orphaned and raises them until they are four years old before releasing them back into the wild at Udawalawe National Park.

Enjoy an early morning game drive around Yala National Park. You will be picked up early at the hotel and proceed in your jeep to the park entrance to collect tickets prior to the park opening. In busy periods this process may take up to 45 minutes. You may see boar, crocodiles, deer and wild elephants roaming free as well as the magnificent Leopard.

Yala National Park is one of the largest national parks in the country with a varied terrain of dry woodland and grassy plains which supports an abundance of wildlife. It is home to a large number of elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild buffalo, jackals, mongoose and crocodiles. The park boasts one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, but they are elusive creatures, so any sighting is sure to be a highlight. Yala National Park is also home to ancient ruins and this mixture of natural beauty, wildlife and ancient culture makes this park a national treasure.

This afternoon, visit the three largest lakes of Ruhuna — the ancient Kingdom of the South, created in the times of the kings and queens. Stop at Debarawewa and meet the farmers and fisherman who sustain themselves with all that surrounds them. Next, move on to Tissa, where the water spreads for miles, bringing in a number of birds. Finally, arrive at Weerawila and hope for an encounter with a village boatman. This journey promises to be filled with a glimpse into rural village life, traditional cultivations and even a visit to the local pottery manufacturer — where you might try your hand at shaping some clay.

Check-out from the hotel at 12:00noon and drive towards your campsite located near Wilpattu National Park.

Transfer Time Approximately 4 hours.

Add-On: Pre Booking Required - If you are planning to visit between the months of November and April, you will have the option of joining a Dolphin Watching Excursion in Kalpitiya. The drive time from your hotel to Kalpitiya is approximately 1.5 hours (US$ 120.00 Per person including the transportation + Private Boat Hire + Wildlife Department Surcharge+ Applicable taxes). Kalpitiya is crowned as a territory of dolphins that sets the northeastern seas of Sri Lanka in motion attracting many visitors to its shores of delight. Arrive at the base by 0730hrs and be met by your local Dolphin Specialist who will guide you on board our dolphin watching vessels. Take an average of 2 hours boat excursion to see Spinner Dolphins. If you are lucky, you may have a school of over 200 dolphins spinning and jumping out of the water to give you an official welcome to Sri Lanka! Several species of whales too have been spotted in the area though sightings are rare.

Return to shore relax and enjoy the beach before heading to Wilpattu for an adventure of camping.

Today, visit the largest National Park in Sri Lanka for a morning Game Drive.

Hop on board a specially modified 4x4 safari jeep and head into a national park like no other in the world. Drive along winding paths through different habitats that make the park unique. Namely Willpattu National parks name translates into the land of the Villus (Lakes). The park contains numerous limestone depressions in the ground that holds fresh and brackish water, that form the characteristic habitat of the park. Driving along the sandy road of the park keep an eye out for some of the island’s iconic wildlife. Leopards roam the sandy roads; Sloth bears dig up the rain-soaked termite mounds, Elephants enjoy the plush water plants in the villus and buffalo graze on the green grass. Heading deeper into the park towards the western boarder you come across a unique stretch of shoreline where the sand is red in colour. Reminisce the amazement that Prince Vijaya the founder of the Sinhala race had when he landed on these red sandy beaches. The Villus which are the only natural large water bodies in the island together with the wildlife, History and culture of Willpattu national park make it interesting for the avid nature lover and history buff alike.

Drive back to the campsite and spend the rest of your day at leisure.

Day 4
Dambulla

After breakfast, spend the morning hours at leisure and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Proceed to Polonnaruwa to conduct a safari at The Minneriya National Park in the evening, which hosts one of the largest Elephant gatherings.

Transfer Time Approximately 2 ½ hours

Minneriya National Park is one of the very few places in the world to witness the ‘Elephant Gathering’. Visitors can witness this rare occasion at Minneriya National Park nestled on the plains of North Central Province. The 8890 hectares of the National Park is an ideal eco-tourism location consisting of mixed evergreen forests and scrubs, favourites such as Sambar Deer, Leopards and Elephants. However, the central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank. During the dry season June to September, this tank is an incredible place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze on the grasses as well as the huge flocks of birds that come to fish in. Twenty-four species of mammals in the island have been reported from this park whilst the most important of them is the wild elephant (Elephant maximus) with a population of 150-200. Between the seasons of July – October elephants assemble on the banks of the Minneriya Reservoir during the dry season. According to wildlife authorities, the Minneriya gathering is the largest grouping of wild Asian elephants at any given time.

Day 5
Dambulla

After breakfast, you will visit The Polonnaruwa Ancient City where you will encounter a range of monkeys’ endemic to Sri Lanka.

Transfer Time Approximately 1 ½ hours.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Walking among the ruins of a once magnificent city will take you back in history to a time when the city of Polonnaruwa was the capital city of the island nation. Torque Macaques Purple Faced and Gray Langurs monkeys are observed mainly inside the Polonnaruwa archeological site and within the surrounding forests.

Drive back to the hotel and spend the rest of your day at leisure.

Day 6
Kandy

Enjoy an early breakfast and head towards The Sigiriya Rock Fortress also known as the 8th World Wonder.

Transfer Time Approximately 30 minutes per way.

Imagine walking through the mouth of a Lion lying a top a 200-meter-tall rock to enter a king’s fortress like no other. That’s what it would have felt like for King Kashyapa and his fellow followers who entered the fortress of Sigiriya. With a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape it was the perfect location for a fortress of a king anticipating an invasion. The king surrounded his fortress with a boulder and water garden that host an ancient irrigation system the continues to baffle the modern engineer, which to date sprouts water on a rainy day. The frescos painted on to the rock are ones not to miss as they show off the mastery of the artists of old. Termed as the 8th wonder of the world this complex used as fortress and as a monastery is true marvel of architecture, design and art and is a UNESCO world heritage site and is something that should not be missed by the anyone traveling to the island.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

Thereafter proceed to Kandy.

Transfer Time Approximately 3 hours.

Kandy surrounded by scenic mountains and tea plantations is a majestic city with much pride as the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings. Kandy was declared as a World Heritage site as it is home to the “Dalada Maligawa” - Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. Today, it is the centre of Buddhism, arts, crafts, dancing, music, and culture. Kandy is renowned for its Esala Perahera (usually held in July or August) which is a must-see event featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, and lavishly decorated elephants.

Day 7
Nuwara Eliya

After a leisurely breakfast, you will visit a Tea Plantation & a Tea Factory.

Transfer Time Approximately 3 hours.

Tea is a huge industry in Sri Lanka. Ceylon Tea is world-famous for its taste, quality and health benefits as well. You will see how the tea pluckers with their baskets and bags pluck tea leaves from the plantations. With women of various ages engaging in this activity, seeing the tea plucking activity is fun and exciting. The trick is to pluck the right tea leaves with the correct properties. These tea leaves are then taken into the factories where the selection process starts. The fresh and best leaves are put into the machines for processing. The rolling, withering, processing is all done with the help of the machines and a lot of helping hands gather around to do the packaging, storing activities as well. You will also get the chance to taste a fresh cup of tea straight from the factory and you will love it.

Day 8
Nuwara Eliya

Early morning, you will trek through Horton Plains National Park.

Rolling grasslands shrouded in mist, mountain towering above the clouds, breath taking views of the valleys below, herds of Sambar deer dot the open plains and numerous birds found nowhere else on earth call from the short stubby trees. There is only one place in the island that you can experience all the above and that’s on a walking trek at Horton Plains. Great herds of sambar roam the plains, while fluffy leopards adapted to the highlands stalk the herds through the long grass, endemic bear monkeys swing among the trees and a variety of lizards and rodents some found only within the boundaries of this park scurry along the tiny paths in the grass. Apart from the fauna and flora, if you’re brave, ignore the vertigo and peek down worlds end, a sheer drop that on clear days gives breath taking views of the green tea fields below. The best time to visit is in the early hours of the day (From 6 am to 10 am) as the stunning views will be misty. The 9.5km round trip takes a leisurely three hours.

Return to your hotel for lunch and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

Yala

After breakfast spend the morning at your leisure and later proceed to your campsite located near Yala National Park.

Day 10
Yala

Early this morning hop onboard a rusty jeep and drive through bumpy roads of Yala National Park (shared jeep).

She stalks through the shadows, avoiding the touch of light, creeping ever closer before pouncing on her unsuspected victim. The leopard who is the master of stealth has made Yala National Park the most popular park in the island. Situated along the southeastern coast of the island, the park consists of habitats that are perfectly suited for its vast leopard population. Rocky outcrops, grasslands, scrub jungle and large hard wood trees makes a perfect combination of habitats for the island’s apex predator. The word around the forest is that block one of the national park, holds the highest density of leopards in the world. Head out on a safari along the winding roads of the park in search of this magnificent cat. The leopard maybe the highlight of your safari, but the diverse habitats of the park are home to, herds of Asian Elephants, Spotted Dear, elusive Sloth Bears, Sambar Deer, and scruffy Wild Boar. A note to remember is we are in a jeep on dirty roads tracking wild animals so it’s not always guaranteed that you will see something, but we will make sure all our knowledge and best efforts are always given.

Thereafter drive back to the campsite for a late breakfast and spend the rest of your day at leisure.

*(The main block at Yala National Park is generally closed from 1st September till 30th October (Annually) but only confirmed by the authorities in August. The closure is to allow the animals some peace during the drought period and to allow regeneration. However, all the hotels will remain open. During the Yala Closure period, Game drives are possible in Yala blocks 3, 5 & nearby Lunungamvehera National Park and Bundala National Park.)

Deniyaya

Rise early and join with the in-house naturalist for a bird watching walk around the hotel premises. Starting time 6.30 am – shared trek – Duration 2 hours.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve – one of the least disturbed and biologically unique primary lowland rain forests in Sri Lanka, covering an extent of over 11000 hectares. Of international significance and declared a Man and Biosphere Reserve (MAB) in 1978 when UNESCO included it in its international network of Biosphere reserves. It was subsequently designated a national wilderness area in 1988 and received full status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. Situated in the lowland wet zone of the country with an average temperature of 23.6C and an annual rainfall of more than 2500mm the high level of endemism makes it an international rarity. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and it is home to over 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians. Of Sri Lanka's endemic birds, all 22 rainforest species are seen here, including the elusive Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie.
