Things to do
Discover MalƩ
Whilst the Maldives are known for secluded, super-luxurious island resorts, visitors would also be remiss not to discover the capital and most populous city of the Maldives - Malé. There are plenty of attractions, local restaurants, and markets here that are sure to give you some insight into Maldivian culture.
If you are stopping to spend some time in Malé, the Old Friday Mosque, the Grand Friday Mosque and the National Museum may interest you. Otherwise, there are beaches and parks where you are free to relax.
Dive with whale sharks
Whale sharks are astounding and relatively rarely encountered creatures. The Maldives are one of the few places in the world where you can come across these giant fish, measuring up to around twelve metres long. Gentle and graceful, whale sharks are not known to harm humans, however you might want a guide to show you the best places to spot them.
It’s known that the warm waters around the South Ari Atoll are preferred by whale sharks, although local knowledge will definitely come in handy when it comes to navigating depths, currents and recent movement and behaviour patterns.
Ride on a Dhoni
A dhoni is a traditional Maldivian boat and a fantastically authentic way to traverse the waves. Originally, these boats were built with coconut timbers and used sails to propel fishermen across the water, but now you’ll find slightly more updated versions with motors to bounce you between the islands.
Most resorts in the Maldives will be able to organise a dolphin-watching tour, sunset cruise, or fishing trip on a dhoni. You can also be ferried out onto a private islet or sandbar for a true castaway experience - just remember a picnic and your suncream.
