Holland America Line is a premium cruise line that offers superlative service. The company has a long history – it was originally founded to take emigrants from the Netherlands to the New World back in 1873 – and now sails around the world, offering some of the most ambitious voyages of any cruise line operating today. The company is also widely regarded as one of the best when it comes to Alaska voyages, having operated in the region longer than any other cruise line.
With a fleet of 11-ships, Holland America Line offers something for everyone but definitely tilts towards those who want to get under the skin of a destination, albeit while enjoying their home comforts. Its cruises range from shortish four to five day sailings right through to epic world cruises that go well beyond 100 days. And, when you look at Holland America’s range of sailings, it is clear that the company’s guests favour those longer sailings, with it regularly calling at far-reaching destinations during its epic voyages.
Food is also a major part of Holland America’s offering. Guests typically have plenty of choice while on board, from the Dining Room to its speciality options including Nami Sushi and Rudi’s Sel De Mer, two restaurants which are both backed by Master Chefs. There’s casual dining too, with a buffet, poolside grill and pizzeria.
One of the best parts about Holland America Line though, is that children are welcome onboard. There are kids’ clubs for those aged 3 to 17 meaning the youngest sailors on board can enjoy treasure hunts, gaming tournaments and time on the sports courts.
Five facts about Holland America Line
- Holland America Line is considered a destination expert, with itineraries reaching virtually every corner of the world. It sails to more than 500 itineraries in 100 countries.
- It classes its ships as “mid-sized” so, while they’re certainly bigger than some of the more luxurious ships, there is always plenty of space on board.
- Through a partnership with the BBC, guests can watch the seminal series Planet Earth, accompanied by live musicians that takes the award-winning footage to the next level.
- The company was the first cruise line in the world to introduce a Global Fresh Fish programme. It now sources more than 80 varieties of sea food from ports around the world. The scheme is backed by Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto who is Holland America’s Global Fresh Fish Ambassador.
- Holland America has been sailing to Alaska for more than 75 years. It also offers land tours to pair with a cruise, for those who want to go deeper into the destination. These include to Denali National Park and the Yukon.
Who is Holland America Line for?
Holland America is a premium cruise line for a discerning crowd. It’s not as luxurious as the six-star cruise lines but its ships are full of incredible features and venues, the latter led by the company’s partnerships which include BB Kings Blues Club, The Rolling Stone Rock Room and BBC Earth.
Where can you sail to with Holland America Line?
You can sail to virtually anywhere with Holland America Line, except deep into destinations like Antarctica or the Arctic. The company does offer “sail-by” cruises to Antarctica but guests won’t make ice landings.
However, the company does operate plenty of in-depth itineraries around the world, from circumnavigations of Australia to the lesser-known ports of Africa. Holland America’s ties to Alaska are pretty much unrivalled, having operated in the region for 75 years.
