Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go
- Most countries you call at within the Eurozone will use the Euro, but currency may vary in other regions on your itinerary. Iceland and Norway use the króna and kroner respectively, so if visiting ports here, be sure to come prepared with the correct currency.
- The summer months tend to be most popular for cruises in these regions, as well as for non-cruise tourism. You’ll have the warmest weather if you cruise during summer, but many ports are likely to be busier in turn. Decide for yourself when is best for you to cruise.
- If you’re visiting certain Scandinavian ports and want to see the aurora borealis, September and October are probably the best months, as these are still popular Scandinavia cruising months and enjoy frequent sights of the northern lights.
- Bring good walking shoes and comfortable clothing for walking. There are many incredible sites of natural beauty to hike to, and a wide array of walking tours available in your port cities and towns.
- Prepare your clothing according to your itinerary and the season. Scandinavian countries can be very chilly, especially in winter or autumn, so pack warm layers for these. If cruising in the summer, bring a sunhat and suncream.
- Pack sunglasses. These are important both for cruising Europe in summer and for visiting icy regions, as snow and ice can reflect so much light as to make it hard to see, especially on bright clear days.
Things to Do
- Taste delicious local foods and goods. From Belgian chocolate to unusual delicacies like Icelandic hákarl, everywhere you go will have its own delicious things to try. Enjoy fine dining at local restaurants, relax in fantastic cafés, or browse the wares of mouth-watering food stalls on the streets and promenades of your ports of call.
- Witness incredible natural beauty. From the green coasts of Ireland to the magnificent and dramatic landscapes of Iceland or Norway, there are breathtakingly-beautiful sights awaiting on your Northern Europe cruise. With plenty of opportunity to appreciate the scenery from deck or from a hike as you prefer, those who love the beauty of nature will have a great time.
- Take walking tours of beautiful cities. Wherever you stop at, the towns and cities on your itinerary each have their wonders to discover. Take a walking tour of remarkable local landmarks and sites with guides who know every fascinating detail about the area.
- Discover history and culture. From museums and galleries to churches and concert halls, there’s so many ways to learn about the history or delight in the arts and culture of the ports you visit.
- See seasonal wonders in the Arctic Circle. In some northerly areas of Scandinavia, depending on the time of year, you can see awe-inspiring celestial light shows, ranging from the aurora borealis in winter to the midnight sun in summer, and incredibly long sunsets and sunrises on either side of the long night or day.
