Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go

  • Some animal and bird species in the Chobe National Park are migratory rather than full-year residents, and will only be present at certain times of year. Others will be far easier to spot at some times of year than others. If there are specific animals you’re keen to see, be sure to check with our experts to find the best time to cruise.
  • The dry season in the Chobe region is from April to October, and the rains fall November through March. The overall best wildlife-spotting times are between May and November, when the dry season brings animals to the river to drink and bathe, especially in the later part of the season. Migratory birds start arriving in the area in late September.
  • Your trips into the National Park will involve a lot of hiking, so good shoes are a must. Bug spray is a good idea for the forested areas, and if you’re cruising during the rainy season, bring along some waterproofs.  Take binoculars to help spot distant animals and birds, and keep your camera ready.
  • The Chobe River eventually flows into the Zambezi, which has many attractions of its own – including the spectacular Victoria Falls. If you’re considering an extension or add-on to your Chobe cruise, something that explores the Zambezi would be a great option.

Things to Do

  • Venture out on private safari boats for a unique safari experience. Offering the opportunity to get closer to wildlife coming to the river to drink, you can spot amazing things while letting the boat do all the walking for you.
  • Spot large game and elusive predators. Large animals like African elephants, giraffes, buffalo, sable, lions and more call the Chobe National Park home. This is one of the only places in the world animals like the puku antelope can be seen. If you’re especially lucky, you might be able to spot rare creatures like leopards, cheetah and even the highly endangered African wild dogs.
  • Go bird-watching. Around 500 different species can be seen here, drawn to the river like the larger land-bound animals are. Some especially rare species are present in the area, like pied kingfisher, woodland kingfisher, black herons, African sacred ibis, knob-billed duck, blacksmith lapwing and tawny eagle – to name but a few.
  • Watch wildlife from your ship. On the Chobe River, you don’t necessarily have to leave the vessel to see incredible things. Enormous numbers of large animals are drawn to the river in the dry season, with hippos in particular submerging themselves with joy. Crocodiles are a frequent sight within the waters, too, and plentiful bird species flock at the edges. Spend some relaxing time on deck and animal-spot at the same time.
  • Take a trip to visit the Victoria Falls, one of the most breathtaking sights you could imagine. As one of the seven natural wonders of the world, these are the largest waterfalls on the planet. The Chobe River is not far at all from this awe-inspiring vision of beauty, so take the chance to visit one of the most magnificent wonders of the world.
