Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go
- Many of the spectacular sights available to you in the Danube’s ports are best enjoyed by strolling around the cities on walking tours, or require a hike to reach. Pack good shoes and practical clothes, bring suncream if you’re cruising in summer, and make sure to take a water bottle.
- The Danube River passes through 10 European countries, and most use the euro, but Hungary does not. If you’re calling at Hungary, make sure to bring Hungarian Forints as well.
- Have a camera and binoculars ready to appreciate sights on the river banks as you pass them by. There’s plenty to see, from forts on the hillsides to the locks you pass through, so spend as much time on deck as possible.
- Take advantage of local knowledge. Staff on your ship and tour guides at your ports of call are likely to know the best local sights, hot spots, and assorted hole-in-the-wall eateries in the area. Their recommendations will help you make the most of your time ashore.

Catch a performance at the Vienna State Opera or visit the iconic St Stephen’s Cathedral…but most of all, make sure not to leave the city before you get a taste of the sweet Viennese treats from confectionary shops or cafés.
Budapest
Beautiful no matter what time of year you’re cruising, Budapest is likely to be either the start or end point of your Danube cruise. This gorgeous Hungarian capital is known as ‘the Pearl of the Danube’, and for good reason – the long history and rich culture of the city makes it both beautiful and full of wonders, with plenty to discover. Visit one of more than 80 thermal springs and wells for a soak, spot grand sights like the opera house and Heroes’ Square, marvel at the architecture, visit galleries and museums, and take in the spirit of the city.
Nuremberg
Renowned for its food and drink-focused culture, Nuremberg is home to a wide array of eateries and taverns – ideal for foodies and beer-lovers alike. This is a particularly good port for history-enthusiasts, with many sites, memorials and museums dedicated to noteworthy moments of World War II. For further-past history, there’s the Imperial Castle, a magnificent fortress that was once home to emperors of the Holy Roman Empire.
Passau
An iconic city for any river cruiser, this is the place where the Inn and Ilz join with the Danube, earning it the name ‘City of Three Rivers’. A top destination for architecture and history, here you’ll find a beautiful Old Town, many museums, impressive churches and cathedrals, and more. This is a fantastic port to call at to connect to tours of Český Krumlov, or to travel to Salzburg to enjoy sights from ‘The Sound of Music’.
