Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go

  • Pack for warm weather. The local climate can get very hot, so be sure to pack appropriately. However, you’ll also want to bring along appropriate cover-ups and more covering clothing to adhere to local standards of modesty, such as loose-fitting clothing that covers your arms and legs.
  • Bring comfortable shoes and clothes for walking. There’s plenty of spectacular sites both in town and in nature that are best appreciated on foot.
  • Learn temple etiquette. Visiting the local Hindu temples is an unmissable experience in your ports of call, but you’ll have to observe proper etiquette during your visits. You will have to remove your shoes, so it’s a good idea to bring along socks to wear inside. You may also be asked to cover up with shawls or other clothing. Offerings and donations are often expected at temples.
  • Take enough cash with you. ATMs can be uncommon in this region, so it’s a good idea to provision your currency ahead of time, both to give tips and to make purchases from local vendors. The currency used is the Indian rupee, otherwise known as ‘taka’ by many locals.
  • Make yourself familiar with local laws. Some things may be common sense, but others – such as prohibition against taking pictures of bridges or other critical infrastructure – may be completely unexpected to the average traveller.

Things to Do

  • Sample delicious food. Many of the ports you’ll pass through in West Bengal are renowned for their delicious cuisine, from mouth-watering curry to the famous Rasgulla sweet treats. You won’t want to miss the chance to sample Bengali food while you’re here, from street food to fine dining.
  • Visit beautiful temples. Along the River Ganges, numerous world-famous Hindu temples await, with stunning architecture and artful carvings everywhere you look. From significant places of worship and pilgrimage sites to Kalna’s breathtaking complex of 108 temples, there are so many amazing sites to see.
  • Enjoy natural beauty. From the gorgeous riverside views to the magnificent countryside surrounding the towns and cities you visit, there’s plenty to explore. Take hikes to witness magnificent mountains and waterfalls, or even just walk around your ports to discover the beautiful gardens there.
  • Learn about local history. From the history of the Hare Krishna movement in Mayapur to the storied past of British India in the region, and the far longer history of the local cultures, there’s so much to discover. Visit museums and historical sites, appreciating the rich cultural heritage of the lands along the River Ganges.
  • Appreciate local flora and fauna. Rare, endangered and exotic animals and plants populate the region, with outstanding NESCO heritage national parks within visiting range of your ports. Traverse incredible mangrove forests, spot saltwater crocodiles, glimpse Indian elephants…and if you’re exceptionally lucky you might even see a Bengal tiger.
