Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go
- The ports you’ll call at along the Rhine will generally use the Euro. Switzerland is the exception, using the Swiss Franc, abbreviated as CHF. Swiss merchants may still accept the Euro in some cases, but it’s better to bring CHF for any time spent in Swiss cities.
- Germany is a country where locals often prefer cash payment even in the largest cities, with many smaller cafes and businesses not accepting card payment at all, so it’s a good idea to have cash on hand. Keep both coins and notes handy.
- The summer months tend to be most popular for cruises in these regions, as well as for non-cruise tourism. You’ll have the most sun if you cruise during summer, and the best swimming weather, but many ports are likely to be busier in turn.
- The Rhine is flanked by a great many old, beautiful historic cities, as well as many beautiful natural landscapes. Bring good shoes so you can take plenty of walking tours and hikes.
- When sampling the wines and beers in German ports, it’s completely okay to drink in public outdoor spaces, but not to actually get drunk. Keep an eye on the alcohol content of your delicious beers and ales, as it may be higher than what you’re used to.
Things to Do
- The myriad historic cities along the Rhine provide many landmarks and sites of interest to see. Churches and forts, cathedrals, picturesque Old Towns, stunning Gothic architecture, and more provide plenty to appreciate in each port of call.
- Enjoy the natural beauty of the Rhine’s surroundings. This region benefits from gorgeous rolling hills and mountains, with Germany’s famous Black Forest very close to multiple ports of call along the river. This mountainous forest is widely renowned as extremely beautiful, and well worth a visit or a hike.
- Discover history and culture. From museums and galleries to churches and concert halls, there are so many ways to learn about the history or delight in the arts and culture of the ports you visit.
- Sample famous local goods. From the wine of the local vineyards or beers of German breweries, there’s a lot of choice for fantastic artisan beverages, but that’s not all. Swiss chocolates or cheeses, delicious local food specialities, and unique regional delicacies all await you.
- Extend your cruise with a stay in nearby cities like Zurich, exploring the wonders and sights of the local area in depth.
