Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go
- The best time to visit much of Central America is December to April, in the dry season where you’ll see the least rain. However, temperatures will be warm with a great deal of sunny weather year-round. If you want to experience a Panama Canal crossing, this must be done between October and April.
- Pack appropriately for the weather. Most places on your cruise to Central America will be warm and sunny year-round, but if you’re travelling in summer, you’ll want to be especially careful with your sun protection. Bring high SPF reef-safe suncream, take sunhats and covering clothing, and keep hydrated.
- If you want to go hiking in the rainforest or elsewhere, bring good walking shoes and bug spray. If you’re checking out any mountainous areas, a light jacket is a good idea too, as high-altitude areas can get chillier than you might expect in summer.
- Most countries in Central America are Spanish-speaking, so knowing a few key phrases in the language might be helpful. Currencies will vary, however, so look into your itinerary and consider taking along some cash of the correct kinds for your trip.
- Take advantage of local guides. Particularly when taking tours of rainforests or reefs, the locals will often know the best places to spot particular fish, animals, or especially gorgeous sights. Making sure you’re booking a local guide is a great way to make the best of your time in port.
Things To Do
- Experience a full transit of the Panama Canal. Central America cruises often include a partial or full transit of the Panama Canal in their itineraries – an iconic experience that is not to be missed. Witnessing the marvel of human engineering that created this canal, enjoying the spectacular scenery that surroundings, and taking advantage of the observation areas on your cruise ship to make the best of it…the crossing will be one to remember.
- Visit gorgeous Caribbean destinations. The placement of Central America offers opportunities to include Caribbean ports in your itinerary, with places like Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic standing out as gems on your journey. Take in the laid-back Caribbean spirit, hit the beach, and take in the sunshine.
- Dive into the underwater world. Whether you’re a scuba diver or prefer to snorkel along the surface, there’s plenty of fantastic opportunities on your Central American cruise. Belize’s waters include the second largest barrier reef in the world, a submerged paradise of corals and fish, and there’s other ports whose waters are worth exploring too, Costa Rica in particular.
- Hike through incredible lush rainforests. Many of the possible additions to your itinerary boast verdant rainforests teeming with plants and animals, with a wide array of exotic birds and animals to spot. Panama, Belize, Costa Rica, Mexico and more await.
- Discover incredible history. Central America is home to some of the relics of old and fantastic civilisations, such as the Mayan and Aztec people and their rich and unique cultures. Today in Mexico you can visit ancient ruins of temples, explore displays in museums, and so much more.
