Day 1
Hotel: Washington Hilton
Begin your Civil War history journey in the heart of the nation, Washington, DC, where the echoes of the past resonate at every turn. Your exploration starts at the western end of the National Mall with a visit to the Lincoln Memorial, a poignant tribute to Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, whose leadership guided the country through its most turbulent era. Just across the Potomac River lies Arlington National Cemetery, a site with deep roots in the Civil War. Established on the grounds of Arlington House, once the estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's wife, the cemetery has since become a revered resting place for the nation's military heroes.
Day 3
Hotel: Best Western Plus Governor's Inn
Collect your car this morning and head out of the city. On your way to Richmond, VA, stop at Manassas National Battlefield Park, which preserves the sites of the First and Second Battles of Manassas, also known as the Battles of Bull Run. It was here that General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson earned his legendary nickname. Further south, visit Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, often referred to as “America’s Battleground.” This park commemorates four of the Civil War's most intense battles and is where Stonewall Jackson met his tragic end. Arriving in Richmond, the capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, you’ll explore Richmond National Battlefield Park, which not only memorializes the battles fought here but also the city's strategic defence against repeated Union assaults.
Day 4
Hotel: Big Meadows Lodge
Before leaving Richmond, don’t miss the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, dedicated to the life of this pioneering civil rights activist who championed the economic empowerment of African Americans. After immersing yourself in history, take a break and head to the natural beauty of Shenandoah National Park. Drive along the stunning Skyline Drive, where lush forests, breathtaking vistas, and cascading waterfalls await. This day offers a perfect balance of reflection and rejuvenation amid the serene landscapes of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Day 5
Hotel: Wyndham Gettysburg
Depart Shenandoah National Park and make your way to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, a site rich in both Civil War and abolitionist history. It was here that John Brown led his famous raid, an event that intensified the nation’s march toward war. Explore the battlefields, museums, and charming streets of this historic community before continuing to Gettysburg, PA. Gettysburg is home to perhaps the most famous battle of the Civil War, a decisive turning point in the conflict. At Gettysburg National Military Park, you’ll walk the grounds where history was made and reflect on the significance of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, delivered in the aftermath of the battle.
Day 7
