Things to do on holiday in San Diego

A trip to Balboa Park is a definite highlight and will take you to a landscape of art and culture, from lavish gardens and magnificent backdrops to performing arts, museums, restaurants and a wealth of attractions including the San Diego Zoo. This vast park really has it all and you’ll definitely need more than one day to explore all of its highlights. El Prado oozes character and will feel like you’re stepping into a different world, awash with tropical vegetation, palm trees, Spanish colonial buildings and museums it’s the perfect place for a picnic or a romantic evening stroll. If you feel peckish the restaurants serve up some amazing dishes.

If animals are your thing then a trip to the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park or Sea World should be top of your list. Get up close and personal to whales, polar bears, sharks and penguins in Sea World before seeing the giant panda family, elephants and monkeys at San Diego Zoo, all surrounded by rare plants and landscapes. There’s thousands of animals for you to see and enjoy and it is a great day out for the whole family.

To get a sense of San Diego’s Mexican heritage a trip to the Old Town is ideal. California’s most visited national park is home to eateries serving delicious burritos, an array of historical buildings as well as museums and plenty of shops to enjoy. For a gastronomic treat head to Little Italy. This area of town is home to some of San Diego’s hottest new restaurantsand bars that make great use of the local areas' fantastic produce as well as seafood fresh from the Pacific Ocean.

Take the quick trip across the San Diego Bay to Coronado. This charming island is where you’ll find the legendary Hotel Del Coronado and is also home to a fabulous beach. Coronado is just the place to escape the big city. Travel up into the mountains and you’ll find the historic mining town of Julian, where you can try some of the best apple pie in all America. Julian is also home to a range of old western style streets as well as antique shops. Visit in the autumn and you could experience the town’s vibrant apple picking season.

For some oceanside luxury, visit La Jolla. Here you’ll find delectable restaurants looking out over the water, boutiques selling gorgeous items and to top it all off a colony of sea lions that can be easily seen from the dock.
