Casa Angelina

5* out of 5 stars

This boutique bolthole surveys its Amalfi Coast surroundings from an enviable clifftop position, affording a classic view of Italy holidays on the Med. Whitewashed exterior walls offset the blue sea and skies perfectly for an arresting first impression. The vibe at Casa Angelina – a brand new hotel in 2018 – is very much modern minimalism, in a way that feels at once contemporary and authentic. Pared-back, understated and white-on-white are the buzzwords where interiors and design are concerned, and the overall effect is one of calm elegance. For a real jetsetter’s hideaway, book one of the rooms in a converted fisherman’s house by the beach.

Breakfast

At Casa Angelina, every day starts off the right way with a big, delicious breakfast. This hotel puts breakfast back on the pedestal it deserves, lining up a fully-fledged feast of morning dishes. An extensive buffet selection includes fresh-from-the-oven breads, homemade cakes and savoury tarts as well as perfectly ripe fruit, honeys and sweet preserves. Enjoy an assortment of cheeses, freshly cut cured meats, salmon and salads too, and the chefs will cook eggs and other hot dishes to order. Guests can choose between various tea blends and herbal teas, as well as freshly squeezed fruit juices, mineral waters and even Champagne - whether you’ve got something to celebrate or want to just celebrate being on vacation. The coffee too, which can be prepared whatever way you desire, whether a simple espresso or a frothy cappuccino, is carefully made by a specialist barista.

Seascape Cocktail Bar

Sip cocktails on the cliff-edge terrace. The on-site bar promises world-class cocktails and majestic views. Some of the most popular seats are to be found on the bar’s cliff-edge terrace, which is furnished with a smattering of teak tables and sun-shading umbrellas, and provides prime vantage points for cocktail sipping while soaking up the exquisite coastal vistas. Expert bartenders look locally for inspiration, mixing together refreshing concoctions such as the Limonce Mojito, a play on the classic mojito featuring white run, Amalfi Coast limoncello liqueur, lemon juice, mint, sugar and soda. Aperol spritz, another classic Italian aperitivo, is also given a twist with hotel-propriety Casa Angelina Champagne (a blend made by Pierre Mignon) providing the fizz. Marrakech’s cigar selection, which features Cubans such as Habanos Cohiba 52, Cohiba 21 and Partacas, alongside a selection of vintage Italian grappas, rums, whiskey and cognacs as well as delectable chocolates from Tuscan artisans Amedei and the Parisian Patisserie Angeline, provide guests with some rather tempting after-dinner options too.

Sundeck Pool Restaurant

Because holidays are made for barefoot, poolside dining. At Casa Angelina, the poolside restaurant serves meals that spotlight the Mediterranean pantry. Think Italian summer staples: Caprese salad done right (with locally produced mozzarella di bufala, sweet juice-bursting cherry tomatoes and peppery rocket) and prosciutto di Parma with melon, as well as more filling mains such as Neapolitan-style meatballs and thin vermicelli pasta with just-caught clams. Desserts offer the chance to indulge in some of the sweet dishes that southern Italy excels at, such as torta Caprese (a flourless chocolate and almond cake), chocolate semifreddo and ice cream or - if you fancy something a little lighter - pineapple carpaccio. So whether you want to lazily graze your way through an afternoon while spread out on a sun lounger overlooking the rugged Amalfi Coast cliffs, or sit down for a long, lingering lunch with your other half, the pool sundeck restaurant has you covered.

Taste

Kindle your passion for Italian cuisine with Casa Angelina’s dining adventures. Good food starts with good local suppliers. Which is why Taste sources the majority of its ingredients from the trusted producers and artisans of the surrounding Amalfi Coast and wider Campania region. The region is, after all, home to some of Italy’s best cheeses (mozzarella di bufala Campana), citruses (those famously sweet Amalfi lemons), and tomatoes (pomodoro San Marzano). Fresh seafood is also in ample supply here, and the region is also a major exporter of pasta, olive oil and wine. With produce like this on offer nearby, why look elsewhere.

Un Piano Nel Cielo

Experience haute cuisine with views to match at this top-floor restaurant. The gourmet restaurant Un Piano Nel Cielo (whose apt name translates as ‘floor in the sky’, owes much to the Amalfi Coast’s natural bounty. Not only does the surrounding landscape yield much of the produce that makes its way the kitchen, it also provides the knockout sea, sky and coastal views visible from the restaurant’s top-floor terrace. Large wall-span windows in the indoor dining space ensure that all guests, whether eating al fresco or not, can also enjoy the dramatic coastal scenery. Menus at Un Piano Nel Cielo take a seasonal slant and borrow from the rich cultural tradition of Campania, with the head chef sourcing the bulk of the produce locally to be used in reimagined classic dishes. With the bountiful waters of the coast literally a stone’s throw away, fish naturally takes pride of place, with everything from tender sautéed squid to lobster spaghetti showing up on the menu. The best cuts of locally sourced meat are also well-represented in carefully considered dishes such as pistachio-crusted rack of lamb and Marsala-marinated beef. Multi-course tasting menus serve as a platform for the kitchen team to showcase their culinary vision with vegetarian tasting menu options available for non-meat eaters. Sommeliers are also on hand to help diners pick the perfect accompaniment from the extensive collection of Italian and international wines.

Wine Cellar

The 4,000-bottle wine cellar is jam-packed with quality from far and wide. Amassed by experienced sommeliers for Un Piano Nel Cielo restaurant and reinvigorated with additions on a regular basis, the wine collection represents some 600 wine labels. It includes top vintages from well-known Italian producers as well as rarer bottles from under-the-radar regional winemakers. While Italian wines dominate the selection, international producers are also represented with a particularly strong showing from France an interesting selection of bottles from emerging regions and soon-to-be-discovered appellations. Bubbles, both of French and Italian origins, also abound and include the hotel’s own proprietary Casa Angelina Champagne brut and rose. Produced by renowned French winemaker Pierre Mignon, the Casa Angelina champagne is served upon arrival to all diners in the Un Piano Nel Cielo restaurant - the hotel’s way of saying benvenuto! Should you want to delve even deeper into the hotel’s pile of pours, a wine tasting session can be arranged, as well as customised wine pairings to accompany your dinner, based on your personal preferences.
