Things to do in Big Island

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses two active volcanoes: Kīlauea, one of the world's most active, and Mauna Loa, the world's most massive shield volcano. To this day, the park provides valuable insight to scientists looking to understand how the Hawaiian islands were created and how the landscape has developed over time. Visitors have a wealth of natural beauty to discover here, including volcanic landscapes, plus rare flora and fauna. In 1980, the park was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve.

Mauna Kea Summit
Mauna Kea Summit, rising 13,796 feet above sea level, is Hawaii's highest point. This dormant volcano boasts stark, otherworldly landscapes, transitioning from lush forests to barren, rocky terrain. The summit is renowned for its astronomical observatories, offering some of the world's best stargazing due to its clear, dark skies. Visitors are treated to stunning panoramic views of the Big Island and beyond, with sunsets and sunrises casting vibrant hues across the horizon. The thin, crisp air adds to the summit's awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach
Perhaps Hawaii’s most renowned black sand beach, Punalu’u is formed from tiny fragments of lava. Fringed by lush, green palm trees and clear water aflutter with colourful marine life, it’s no wonder that this is such a popular destination for snorkelling, sunbathing, and photography on Big Island. If that wasn’t enough, you can also spot the endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles soaking up the sun’s rays on this beach. It’s an incredible sight to witness these protected species against the starkly coloured backdrop of the beach.

Akaka Falls State Park
Akaka Falls State Park offers a lush tropical paradise. The park features a scenic, easy-to-navigate loop trail through dense rainforest, showcasing vibrant flora and fauna. The highlight is the majestic Akaka Falls, a 442-foot waterfall that plunges into a gorge, creating a stunning, mist-filled spectacle. The park also includes the smaller but picturesque Kahuna Falls. With its rich greenery, serene atmosphere, and breathtaking waterfalls, Akaka Falls State Park provides an unforgettable nature experience.

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden
Nestled on the Big Island's Hamakua Coast, is a lush paradise spanning 40 acres. This nonprofit garden showcases over 2,000 species of tropical plants, including orchids, heliconias, and palms, amid scenic waterfalls and tranquil streams. Winding paths lead visitors through diverse plant collections, offering stunning ocean views and serene encounters with nature. The garden's rich biodiversity and vibrant colours create a captivating experience, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and botanical enthusiasts alike.
