Known for its untamed coastline – stretching 2,000 kilometres and capable of taking the breath away of even the most seasoned traveller – Sardinia’s diverse landscape has attracted settlers for millennia. Today hikers come for the hills, history buffs for the bronze age ‘nuraghi’ and beach bums for the secluded white-sand coves. The architectural majesty of Cagilari’s 14th century palaces demands attention too, as does the island’s marina-side bar and restaurant scene.

Luxury Holidays in Sardinia

It’s over 45 years since our first foray into the world of luxury holidays here at Kenwood Travel. Our destination portfolio has been expanding ever since, so it was only a matter of time before Europe’s classic getaways caught our attention. For all the laidback charm and casual atmosphere of its luxury hotels, Sardinia was an easy choice for us to add to our repertoire – welcome to luxury holidays in Sardinia with Kenwood Travel.

Great reasons to holiday in Sardinia

  • Short flights – In just two hours you could be disembarking on an island of otherworldly charm. Amazingly, Sardinia remains relatively free of the bucket-&-spade masses that descend on some other short haul European destinations. For a refined break in no time at all, hop on a flight to Sardinia.
  • Boutique shopping – Don your designer sunglasses and rub shoulders with the glitterati thronging Via Roma – Alghero’s most glam and glitzy shopping street.
  • Great food – Seafood lovers should sidle up to Alghero’s boulevard bistros for a taste of the local speciality: Catalan lobster. For the bolder palette, the roast porceddu suckling pig is another must-try delicacy.
  • History & heritage – From rampaging Vandals and Visigoths of the dark ages, to the Romans and the Medieval Kingdom of Aragon, Sardinia wears its battle scars with pride. As recently as the First World War, when the Sardinian Brigita Sassari division became the most decorated of the Italian soldiers, the island’s military history continues to enthral.

Things to do on holiday in Sardinia

Relax on the beach – They might be biased but Sardinians claim their beaches to be the best in the Med. And who are we to argue? Spend an afternoon basking on the soft sands of La Pelosa, Li Coggi or Cala Gonone and you’ll soon discover why locals and visitors alike flock to the island’s beautiful coastline to socialise, sunbathe and swim in the warm, sapphire-blue waters.

Go back in time – The iron age huts or ‘nuraghe’ that dot the landscape are unique to Sardinia. The best examples form the Nuraghe Su Nuraxi complex in Barumini; Sardinia’s only World heritage site. By 6000BC the beehive-shaped dwellings had expanded to include fortified walls and ramparts complete with arrow slits - an eerie glimpse into a violent past. The site wasn’t discovered until 1949 when heavy rains washed away the surrounding earth.

Take a wine-tasting tour – The cellars at Cantine Surrau unveil the star vintages of Sardinia’s sommelier heritage. Look out for the Cannonau reds and Vermention whites, plus don’t miss the local art on display in the gallery.

Get an adrenalin fix – Head to Isola dei Gabbiani for some high-octane watersports action. Watch the pros or get kitted out at one of the surf shacks and hit the waves yourself. The conditions here are perfect for kite surfing, with various surf schools on hand too to show you the ropes.

Weather in Sardinia

Inland valleys and mountainous regions enjoy a continental climate, whereas along the coast and low hills the weather is more noticeably Mediterranean. Summers are hot and pretty much rainless with daily temperatures averaging about 26°C.
