Great reasons to holiday in Crete

  • Culture – Cretan culture is very much entwined with the history of some of our most loved art forms. Poetry, music and literature have all played a huge role in Crete's cultural history and are very much embraced to this day.
  • Beaches - The 1046km long coastline of Crete is lined by some of the most idyllic beaches in the Mediterranean. Wherever you stay on the island, a world class beach will not be far away.
  • Cuisine – Cretan food is mostly made using fresh, natural ingredients and includes plenty of fruits, pulses, wild herbs and aromatic plants. Be sure to try dakos, a dried bread with feta, tomato and oregano drizzled over the top.
  • Mythology – Crete is deeply connected with Greece's mythology, during your time on the island you can visit locations linked to an array of well known stories.

Things to do while in Crete

The café culture in Crete is certainly something to be sampled. If you find yourself in a small village or town, check out a kafeneion where you can try local coffees, beers, raki and ouzo.

Crete is an island of many festivals which mostly revolve around barbecues, music and dancing. From July to August the island celebrates Kyrvia Festival, where there is wide programme of cultural activities to try your hand at.

There are plenty of places to indulge in retail therapy. Head to the Iraklio Market and you'll find a treasure trove of edible delights including fresh fruit, olives and bread straight from the oven. The Talos Plaza meanwhile is a large mall where you can purchase an array of well known fashion labels.

Crete, unsurprisingly for an island with such an extensive past, has a choice of fascinating historical sites to visit. The Venetian Fortress, built between 1573 and 1580, has left a beautiful set of ruins to explore while the Lychnostatis Museum recreates a traditional Cretan village.

Weather in Crete

Crete lies mainly within the Mediterranean climatic zone and as such the weather is warm and at times humid. During summer expect average temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s while in winter it rarely drops below 10°C. The southern end of the island is within the North African climatic zone meaning more days of sunshine.
