Helpful Tips to Know Before You Go

  • In some countries, it will be hard to download maps once you’re there, or in some cases offline maps won’t be available at all. It’s a good idea to prepare yourself if you’re heading out of town, and download maps ahead of time.
  • Unlike some parts of the world, there isn't much of a tipping culture in most Far East countries. Tips aren't expected in restaurants and bars. However, tour guides, porters and housekeepers in hotels will be used to receiving tips – it would be polite to tip them when you can.
  • While Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at major tourist destinations in the Far East, you will likely need cash for street vendors, taxi drivers, small restaurants, and so on. Be sure to keep local currency on hand, and plan ahead of time, as access to an ATM is not always guaranteed.
  • There are many different cultures in the Far East and it's a good idea to learn how to behave respectfully. When visiting a temple or shrine in particular, cover your arms and legs, don't stare at people praying, and don't photograph monks or other staff unless you have permission. You will often need to take shoes off when touring interior spaces, and should avoid displaying the soles of your shoes anywhere on the grounds.
  • Bring an outfit that covers your shoulders and knees, as this is standard dress in many local countries. Take a scarf or shawl along to have extra options for covering up if you need to.
  • Cherry blossom season in Japan often peaks in March to April. In 2024, the peak is expected to be from late March to early April, particularly in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

Things To Do

  • Try local foods. The Far East boasts an array of dishes and flavours that are famous world-wide, and even less widely-touted examples like Malaysia or the Philippines have incredible and unique traditional dishes to try. Sampling local dishes is a must for anyone on a Far East cruise.
  • Discover the cultures and history of the countries you visit. From the rich history of China, the oldest still-living civilisation in the world, to the cultural marvels that every Far East country has to offer, you’ll never run out of things to do. Visit temples, learn the history, and explore rich arts and architecture in every corner.
  • Discover world-famous experiences. Some activities available on your Far East cruise are not to be missed, like the incredible cherry blossom viewing parties of Japan, or the floating markets of Thailand. Make the most of your chosen ports and check out these special opportunities.
  • Visit famous landmarks. Ascend Mount Fuji in Japan, see the giant buddha in Hong Kong, visit the Taejongdae lighthouse in Korea, and so much more. Everywhere you go, there’ll be iconic local sites and sights to appreciate.
  • Enjoy the natural world. The Far East holds breathtaking beauty at every turn, with lush forests, towering mountains, and pristine beaches ready and waiting for you to discover. Incredible rock and mountain formations in China, gorgeous Thai lagoons, iconic wildlife and more: there’s plenty of reason to keep your camera ready.
