Plato's Plato's

Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early 19th century, and it is around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of being hungry during the late afternoon. At the time, it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day: breafast and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot of tea and light snacks, taken privately in her room during the afternoon. Later, frineds were invited to join her in her room at Woburn Abber, and this summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it, when she returned to London, sending invitaitons to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walk in the field”. Before long, all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. Plato’s Lounge welcomes our guests during Afternoon tea time, inclusive of two hot beverages.

Served daily (except Fridays): 14:00 – 17:30
Plato’s “Honey Me”! Afternoon tea Served on Fridays only: 14:00 – 17:30
