Tailor Made Holidays to Barbados
We at Kenwood Travel are experts when it comes to luxury holidays to the Caribbean and our knowledge and experience will ensure that you will have the trip of a lifetime. We deal directly with some of the best and most exclusive hotels in the business so that you don't have to worry about a thing since everything will be taken care of. You merely have to decide if you'd rather go waterskiing or sunbathing, go get a spa treatment or play a round of golf before going out for a luscious meal or fancy drinks.
Whilst on holiday in Barbados you'll encounter a beautiful place that values tradition with enough familiarity to make things less stressful (they are decent enough to drive on the left), combined with a tropical piquancy and a warm welcome from a people who know how to have a good time. Barbados holidays are enjoyed against the backdrop of an island steeped in history with pristine beaches that seem to go on forever. The island also offers some of the finest water sport opportunities in the Caribbean.
10 great reasons to book a holiday in Barbados
- Wonderful climate
- Great beaches
- Excellent restaurants
- Lively nightlife (on south of island)
- Friendly people
- Excellent hotels and accommodation
- Brilliant service
- Fantastic watersports
- Great shopping in Bridgetown (with duty free)
- A choice of over 1,000 rum shops
The warm climate and accommodating people make weddings and honeymoons in Barbados extremely popular. There are many things to do in Barbados out and about on the island; eating and socialising is more varied and more pleasurable than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. Additionaly visitors from Britain will find many reminders of home, from the wigs and robes worn in parliament to the statue of Nelson in National Heroes Square (formerly Trafalgar Square.)
The Atlantic East Coast of Barbados
Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands lying in the path of cooling trade winds. Although the island measures only 21 miles x 14 miles, its shores are blessed with almost 60 miles of shimmering white sands. The dramatic, windswept east coast is washed by Atlantic waves and dotted with huge boulders. This spectacular and rugged scenery is a photographer's dream but also provides some good surfing opportunities.
The island's location out in the Atlantic Ocean allows waves to travel vast distances before finally unloading all their power. A wave can travel nearly three thousand miles in the open ocean, undisturbed by sandbars, reefs or land, before it breaks on Barbados’s eastern shore. The main town on the east side is Bathsheba, from where (if you’re fortunate enough) you’ll catch sight of the Soup Bowl, the island’s biggest wave. Watching the swells curl into massive walls of water is pure magic, even if no-one is surfing.
The Caribbean West Coast of Barbados
The palm-edged Caribbean beaches of the west coast are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. The west coast offers white sand beaches lapped with warm turquoise waters. Some of the hotels on this balmy coast are among the most sophisticated in all the Caribbean. It is possible to find everything you might want or need in your resort, but it’s worth visiting nearby towns and villages to soak up the local flavour South of the capital, Bridgetown. The coast boasts palm fringed beaches and a gently foaming surf that produces a combination favoured by windsurfers and beach lovers alike.
The island has its very own gold coast for swimmers named after the fabulous sands. Visitors come from all over the world to take part in windsurfing, surfing and sail boarding competitions. Sports fans can also play golf and tennis and watch some of the world’s best cricketers.
Things to do in Barbados
Many of the grand homes built by the sugar kings are open to the public. Plantation mansions such as Sam Lord’s Castle contain many of their original gilt and mahogany fittings. You can still see a working sugar plantation on Arbib Nature and Heritage trail and the island is perfect for exploration on foot. If you prefer formal settings, there are the famous cliff-set Andromeda Gardens. Some of the finest hotels and apartments on the island are positioned in beautifully planned and lushly maintained tropical landscapes.
- Historic Plantation House tours
- Atlantis Submarines
- Harbour Lights beach extravaganza
The biggest annual event in Barbados is the Crop Over Festival, celebrating the harvest of sugar cane which used to be the island’s main industry. The five-week summer celebration is a fiesta of colourful floats, parades and people in costume dancing and enjoying themselves to the background of music and fireworks. It also offers the opportunity to taste the finest island cuisine. Everyone is encouraged to join in. Music lovers can hear the world's best artists at the annual Paint It Jazz festival.
The capital Bridgetown offers good shopping; you can buy virtually anything but star purchases must be alcohol (rum in particular), wood carvings and clothing. Click here for more ideas.
Weather
The Caribbean is subject to a hurricane season which runs from 1st June to 30th November. 80% of the storm weather activity occurs during August to October with a peak around mid-September. The centre of most storms misses Barbados and there are usually only minor disruptions to weather conditions. Each year a negligeable number of storms gives rise to stronger weather conditions which remain completely normal and generally holidays to the island do not suffer from hurricane disruption.
